what is walking football? And how to play

  • Sports

Think football is only for people who can sprint for 90 minutes? Think again.

Walking football proves you don't have to run, jog or even skip to enjoy this game. Whether your playing days are behind you, you're looking for a gentler way to stay active or you simply fancy swapping the sofa for the sidelines, walking football is a brilliant way to get moving at a slower pace.

Don't worry, walking is compulsory, so nobody's disappearing into the distance! No one gets left behind here.

what is walking football?

Walking football is exactly what it sounds like. It's football, but without the running, it's walking.

So, players must keep at least one foot on the ground at all times, creating a slower-paced game that's all about the basic level of football rules and having a great time with your teammates. You'll still celebrate a great goal you'll just get there at walking speed.

Almost anyone can play walking football. Walking football is mostly popular with people aged 50+, but it's open to anyone regardless of age and who wants a low-impact way to enjoy football. You don't need to be a former Rolando goal scoring machine to play and you definitely don't need to know how to do keepy uppies.

If you can walk, you can play. It's that simple!

what are the basic walking football rules?

The rules are easy to pick up, even if it's been years since you last kicked a football.

  • no running

This is the big one and the main rule of the game so don't forget! . Running isn't allowed, it's strictly a walk in the park.

  • keep it friendly

Walking football is a non-contact game, meaning no tackles or shoulder barges etc you get the point. It's competitive, but it's not rugby, everyone's there to enjoy themselves and not end up with injuries at the finishing whistle.

  • smaller pitch

Games are played on smaller pitches, so there's less chasing and more passing.

  • ball height

Many sessions have a height limit on the ball in the air, helping to keep the game safe and also means nobody needs to practise their headers.
