Learn to love running in 2018!

Happy New Year everyone! We hope you’ve all had a fantastic holiday and are looking forward to getting back into the swing of all things fitness.

We thought we’d kick off 2018 with a look at running. It may be a tad cold and wet out there, but that doesn’t mean there’s not plenty to love about running! It’s simple to start, hard to master, and can be done both outside and in your local Brio centre.

Some people love running anyway, but not all of us find it easy or enjoyable so we’ve put together a few of the top ways you can learn to love it as much as we do!

Set a target

This is a great starting point. It can be hard to get motivated to start running, especially with no goal in sight. Set yourself a target, such as running to a local landmark or even taking part in a Park Run! The Couch 2 5k app is another great tool for setting small, realistic goals.

Run with a friend

If you can find someone with a similar running ability to yourself, it can make the whole experience more fun. It’s a great social activity, especially if you set yourself group targets and keep each other motivated. If you’re not able to find someone to run with, take a look around for a local running group. These are always welcoming new members and can be a great way to improve your abilities and make new friends too.

Change your thinking

Don’t think of running as a chore. Think of it as precious time to yourself. Sometimes we’re so busy we don’t get much time to be alone and think. If you don’t fancy running with a friend or group, you may prefer just taking some time to yourself instead. Running alone or with music can be almost meditative, and a great way to learn to love it!

Reward yourself!

We think this is a really important one. Lots of people start running because you don’t really need any special equipment. Some workout gear and a pair of trainers and you’re good to go. Once you’ve set targets though, it’s definitely worth rewarding yourself for your hard work. Once you’ve got to 5k, maybe treat yourself to a new pair of headphones, and at 10k a nice new pair of running shoes to show that you’re serious about your new hobby!
