How to Play Squash: A Beginner’s Guide22 Aug
Squash is a fast-paced sport played by either two players (singles) or four players (doubles) in a four-walled court. Known for its intense physical demands, squash offers a fantastic workout and a lot of fun. If you’re new to the game, and are a wannabe squash player, this is a how-to guide, made for you!
Equipment you may need:
- Good Squash Racquets: A squash racquet is lighter and smaller than a tennis racquet. Choose one that feels comfortable in your hand and provides a good balance of power and control. Brio is always on hand to lend you some if you need them!
- Squash Ball: Squash balls come in different speeds, indicated by coloured dots. Beginners should start with a blue dot ball, which is slower and bounces more, making it easier to play. Brio will provide these for you if you need them.
- Squash Shoes: Non-marking indoor court shoes are essential to avoid damaging the court and to provide proper grip. Look for shoes with good support to handle the quick movements in squash.
The rules of squash
In squash, the aim is to hit the ball against the front wall so the opponent can’t return it before it bounces twice on the floor. That’s the idea anyway! So, how is the game played?
- Service: Play the ball! The game starts with a serve. When serving, the player must keep one foot inside the service box and hit the ball towards the front wall above the service line.
- Rally: Players alternate in hitting the ball towards the front wall. The ball must hit the front wall before touching the floor.
- Players typically play matches best out of five games. Each game goes up to 11 points, and a player wins by two points.
Tips for Squash Beginners
- Footwork: Good footwork is crucial. Stay on the balls of your feet, and be ready to move quickly in any direction.
- Shot Selection: Learn the basic shots like drives, volleys, and drop shots. Focus on accuracy and consistency rather than power to win the game!
- Positioning: Try to return to the “T” position (the centre of the court) after each shot. This allows you to cover the court more effectively.
- Fitness: Squash is physically demanding. Incorporate cardio and strength training into your routine to improve your on-court performance. At Brio, we have gyms, fitness classes and more!
So, now you have the Squash rules – let’s play!
