The Rules of Badminton Service
Badminton is a fast-paced and exciting sport! If you are new to the game or need a refresher, it is important to understand the rules of a Badminton service.
In this blog, we will break down the fundamental rules of badminton singles to help you get started.
So, racquets at the ready for these badminton tips!
1. The Court & Equipment
If you book a court at Brio Leisure, we will set up your court for you! Win win! We can also supply you with your racquets and shuttlecock.
2. Basic Rules
Players can play badminton as singles (one player per side) or doubles matches (two players per side). But we are focusing on singles here!
Singles
- The Structure: The best out of three rounds determines the winner.
- Game Points: Players play each game to 21 points.
- Scoring: Players score a point on every serve, regardless of which side is serving. We refer to this as rally scoring.
- The win margin: If the score reaches 20-20, a player or team must win by two clear points. If the score reaches 29-29, the next point wins the game.
3. Serving Rules
Singles:
The server stands in their right service court when their score is even and in their left service court when their score is odd.
The player must hit the serve underhand and below the waist.
4. Faults
A fault is a violation of the rules that results in a point for the opponent. Common faults include:
- Serving! When they strike the shuttlecock above their waist or when they do not point the racquet head downward.
- Net Faults: Touching the net with the racquet or body.
- Out of Bounds: The shuttlecock lands outside the court boundaries.
- Double Hit: Hitting the shuttlecock twice in succession.
5. Let
A “let” occurs when the rally stops and replays without changing the score. Common reasons for a let include:
- The shuttlecock gets caught in the net when it passes over it.
- The server serves before the receiver is ready.
6.Badminton Tips To Win!
Use the long serve in Badminton
The aim is to hit the shuttle high and long and make it drop as close to the furthest backline as possible. This will make it extremely difficult for an opponent to hit an effective return.
The Backhand Serve in Badminton
A good backhand serve helps give you an advantage from the start of the rally. To do it, hold the shuttlecock with your thumb and index finger using a backhand grip.
7. Winning The Match
To win a match, a player or team must win two out of three games. Players play each game to 21 points, and the winner must have at least a two-point lead unless the score reaches 29-29, in which case the next point wins.
