how long does it take to learn to swim?

This could be one of the most common questions asked to swim teachers.

the short answer?

There isn’t one. And while that might not be the number people are hoping for, it’s actually good news! Because in swimming, progress isn’t about speed—it’s about the person.

Hopefully, this blog will help you understand the different factors that may be affecting your, or your child's progress. I will also be suggesting how to make it easier.

"everyone learns to swim at the same pace"

A common belief holds that swimming is something you can learn in a number of months. People seek to find a specific timeline.

In reality, research into swimming education shows that a wide range of factors influence learning. These include: as confidence, previous experience, and the learning environment.

That means two people starting at the same level can progress at completely different speeds.

confidence matters more than you think

One of the biggest factors in learning to swim isn’t physical ability—it’s confidence.

For some people, getting into the water feels natural. For others, especially those with a past bad experience, putting their face in the water can be a big step.

Research has shown that fear of water is one of the strongest barriers to progress in swimming. That’s why Brio lessons focus on building confidence first often leading to positive outcomes.

Water confidence plays a role in every stage in its own way. It could be something you can overcome both in swim lessons and at home. If in doubt and unsure, it is always best to contact us to direct you to the appropriate member of staff to help.

consistency beats “natural ability”

A common myth is that some people are just “naturally good” at swimming.

While confidence and coordination do matter, studies show that regular practice and frequent lessons matter more than natural ability.

That means:

-attending lessons consistently. If there are gaps in attendance, the skill covered on the weeks they did not attend could have been what they needed to learn.

-spend time in the water often. With Brio swim lessons, you get a free public swim pass. This builds confidence and makes swimming feel fun.

-reinforcing skills between sessions. This could be practicing what you learnt that week and try and strengthen it.

These all can make a huge difference to how quickly someone progresses.

everyone starts from a different place

Every swimmer having their first lesson, brings different experience, including:

1)previous experience in the water. Such as baby/toddler lessons or as simple as have been in a swimming pool before.

2) coordination and motor skills. There are basic skills that make swimming easier. These are core aquatic skills you need to pass. Some of these skills are as follows: throwing, jumping and kicking.

age and stage of development

Progress doesn’t follow a straight line so you shouldn’t compare it. Working on the fundamental movement skills at any age will make learning how to swim easier.

Some children may appear to “pick it up” quickly, while others take more time to master the same skills. That doesn’t mean one is doing better than the other.

what does “learning to swim” actually mean?

Another reason timelines vary is that swimming isn’t just one skill.

Being able to float and swim on the front and the back is not the only thing you will learn. They learn core aquatic skills in the lesson which could save their life. Some of these include: safe entries into the water, coordination, water safety and health & fitness.

so… how long does it take?

With regular lessons, many people begin to develop basic swimming skills within a matter of weeks.

But becoming a confident, capable swimmer can take longer—and that’s perfectly normal.

Progress in swimming is individual as each person is different. Learning to swim has no timeline—only yours.
