netball rules: a beginner’s guide to the game

Want to play netball but not sure where to start?
Netball is a fast-paced team sport. It has some similarities to basketball, but it has its own unique rules and gameplay. This makes it exciting to watch and even more fun to play.
In this blog, we will explain the basic rules of netball. Whether you are playing for the first time or cheering from the sidelines, you will know what is happening.
team structure
- 7 players per team on court.
- Each player has a specific position, and each position has restricted movement zones.
Positions include:
- GS (Goal Shooter)
- GA (Goal Attack)
- WA (Wing Attack)
- C (Centre)
- WD (Wing Defence)
- GD (Goal Defence)
- GK (Goal Keeper)
Each position has a specific role! This includes where players can go on the court and what they can do.
dimensions of a netball court
- The netball court is divided into thirds:
- Two goal thirds
- One centre third
- A shooting circle is located at each end.
- Only the GS and GA can shoot goals, and only when inside the shooting circle.
how long is a netball match?
- A standard game is 4 x 15 minutes.
- Teams swap ends after each quarter.
- Short breaks exist between quarters and a longer break occurs at halftime.
basic rules
no dribbling
Unlike basketball, once a player catches the ball, they can't run or dribble. They must pass within 3 seconds.
footwork rule
When you catch the ball, you must keep one foot grounded (your landing foot). If you move or pivot incorrectly, you commit a footwork violation, and the other team gains possession.
contact rule
The rules do not allow physical contact during the opponent's play. A player must be at least 3 feet (0.9m) away from the player with the ball when defending.
offside rule
Players must stay in their designated zones. If you enter an area you're not allowed in (even for a second), you're offside.
scoring
- Only the GA and GS can score.
- A goal is worth 1 point.
- Players must take shots within the shooting circle.
starting & restarting play
- Every quarter begins with a centre pass from the Centre (C).
- Centre passes alternate between teams, regardless of who scored last.
common violations
- held ball - holding the ball longer than 3 seconds.
- stepping/footwork - moving both feet after catching the ball.
- contact - making physical contact with an opponent.
- obstruction - defending too close (less than 3 feet).
- offside - means you enter an area where the rules do not allow your position.
how to win
The team with the most goals at the end of the four 15 minute quarters wins the game. Netball is a sport of speed, strategy, and teamwork. Once you get the hang of the positions and key rules, it becomes a thrilling game to both watch and play. If you want to join a team or learn the game, knowing the basic rules is a great start.
