a guide to football equipment for kids

Football is a great, free activity for kids of all ages to burn off some energy. For those starting to play more competitively as the new season approaches, we’ve put together a helpful list of equipment that can support their game. Don't feel pressure to purchase! It's only a guide to what you might want to get to kickstart their new activity!
football boots: grip for every pitch
The right football boots can make a big difference in performance and safety.
- Firm ground (FG) boots are ideal for natural grass.
- Astro turf trainers (TF) are made for 3G/4G pitches and hard surfaces.
- Soft ground (SG) boots with metal studs are used on muddy or wet grass.
➡️ Make sure they fit well and offer ankle support. Many retailers offer free boot fitting.
shin pads: a must-have for matches
Shin pads are required in all organised matches and most training sessions.
- Look for CE-marked pads that meet safety standards.
- You can choose slip-in pads that go under compression sleeves. Another option is ankle-shin guards with extra ankle protection for younger players.
Top Tip - Fit is important, pads should cover most of the shin without being bulky.
football kit
Most clubs provide match kits, but you may want to purchase your own training kit so here is a list of what you might need!
- Lightweight, breathable tops & shorts
- Long socks are essential to hold shin pads in place.
- Consider layering with base layers during colder months.
- Football player gloves
Top Tip - Label everything, kids often misplace kit items during sessions.
goalkeeper kit (for budding keepers)
If your child is a goalkeeper, they might need additional gear:
- Padded goalkeeper jersey and trousers
- Goalkeeper gloves with proper grip
- Glove wash and towel to maintain grip and hygiene
football
Many clubs provide balls, but it’s handy for kids to have their own for practice.
- Size 3 football: Ages 6–9
- Size 4 football: Ages 10–13
- Size 5 football: Ages 14+
➡️ Check with your club to confirm the size they use.
extra practice training kit
- pop-up football goals
- football training mat
- flat football cones
- free kick mannequins
