badminton how to drop shot

  • Sports

A drop shot in badminton is an accurate stroke. It goes just over the net and lands close to it on the other side of the court. Players use it to catch their opponent off guard and bring them to the front of the court.

Two main types exist: forehand drop shot and backhand drop shot. Here’s how to perform a forehand drop shot, the most common type:

how to do a forehand drop shot in badminton

✅ 1. grip

Use the forehand grip:

  • Hold the badminton racket like a handshake.
  • Make sure your thumb is on the side of the handle, not wrapped around.

✅ 2. preparation

  • Stand in a ready position with knees slightly bent.
  • If the shuttle is coming high, get under it early.
  • Raise your racket arm and non-racket arm for balance.
  • Position your body sideways to the net (like you would for a smash or clear).

✅ 3. swing and contact

  • Swing your racket like you’re about to smash or clear.
  • Just before hitting the shuttle, slow down your swing.
  • Contact the shuttle above your head and in front of your body.
  • Use a soft, slicing motion with minimal force to barely clear the net.

✅ 4. follow through

  • Your follow-through should be short and controlled, not full like a smash.
  • Aim for the shuttle to drop just past the badminton net.

💡 tips for an effective drop shot

  • Disguise it by starting like you're going to smash or clear.
  • Aim low—the shuttle should fall quickly after crossing the net.
  • Mix it up: use drop shots with smashes and clears to keep your opponent guessing.
  • Practice both fast (attacking) and slow (deceptive) drop shots.
