types of netball passes
Passing is one of the most fundamental and essential skills in netball. No matter if you are new or experienced, learning different types of passes can improve your game. It can also help your team work better together and outsmart defenders. Here’s a breakdown of key passes and tips to refine your technique.
types of netball passes
1. chest pass
A two-handed pass thrown from the chest in a straight line. It's fast and accurate, ideal for short to medium distances when there’s a clear passing lane.
2. bounce pass
Thrown toward the floor so that it bounces up to the receiver. This is especially useful in tight situations or to manoeuvre around a defender.
3. shoulder pass
A strong, one-handed pass thrown from the shoulder. It’s perfect for long distances, requiring good wrist control and accuracy.
4. lob pass
A high, arcing pass that goes over defenders. It can be difficult to master. However, players enjoy it when the receiver is closely guarded. They also like it when they have to cover more of the court.
why use different passes?
adaptability
Switching up your passes keeps defenders guessing and helps open up space on the court.
versatility
Each game situation demands a different approach. Tight defenses, open spaces, or distance can all influence your choice of pass.
accuracy & speed
For instance, use a chest pass for speed and accuracy, and a bounce pass to sneak the ball past a close defender.
key tips for better passing
stance
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent to maintain balance.
grip
Hold the ball with fingers spread, thumbs underneath for better control.
execution
Step into the pass, shifting weight forward, and flick your wrists and fingers to direct the ball.
follow-through
Finish your pass with arms extended and fingers pointing toward your target to ensure accuracy.
general tips for all passes
- keep your head up: Always look for your target, not the ball, to improve your vision and accuracy.
- use your body: Generate power from your legs and core, transferring your weight from your back foot to your front foot.
- practice follow-through: A good follow-through helps ensure a more accurate and consistent pass.
- practice consistently: Repetition is key to accuracy and consistency. Try passing against a wall or with a partner to improve your skills
