what is New Age Kurling? beginners guide

New Age Kurling is sweeping across the UK and the best part? No ice needed!
This modern take on curling brings all the fun, strategy and teamwork of the classic sport straight onto floors, mats, or synthetic surfaces. In this blog, we will explain New Age Kurling. We will also give beginners a guide to sliding, scoring and enjoying this fun new sport.
what is new age kurling?
New Age Kurling is curling for the 21st century - it’s fast, accessible, and doesn’t require an ice rink! Players slide stones (or stone-like discs) across special mats, aiming for the target circles, called the “house.”
Instead of ice, players use mats marked with houses and target zones to play New Age Kurling on a flat surface. The playing area is smaller than a traditional ice rink, making games quicker and beginner-friendly.
equipment:
- Stones: Lightweight, floor-friendly stones or discs.
- Mats: Special synthetic sheets with markings for the house.
- Shoes: Comfortable indoor shoes with good grip.
- Optional brooms: Some versions use brushes to add a “sweeping” element.
Scoring works like traditional curling. After the team delivers all the stones, the team with the stone closest to the centre of the house scores points. Additional stones closer than the opponents’ count for extra points.
rules of New Age Kurling
Players take turns sliding stones toward the house. Accuracy and placement are key so you can aim to score points or block your opponents.
Some versions include a “guard zone” to prevent early stones from being knocked out by the opposing team. This keeps the strategy alive and makes the game more tactical.
Teams of 2-4 players communicate to plan their shots, just like on ice. Strategy, timing, and teamwork make the difference between winning and losing.
New Age Kurling is perfect for everyone. It’s safe, low-impact and social making it ideal for families, clubs, schools, or anyone who loves fun, tactical sports.
