how many players are in a basketball team

  • Sports

Basketball is a brilliant fast-moving team sport! Where teamwork and tactics come into play. But to start this action packed game, how many players play on a basketball team?

A team may have many players but, only five from each side can be on the court at once. So gather your friends as you will need at least 10 to compete against each other. The others sit on the bench as reserves. Each player has a specific role, known as a position, which helps the team work effectively in attack and defence.

The five main positions are: centre, power forward, small forward, point guard, and shooting guard. Let’s take a closer look at each role so you can start shooting those hoops.

positions of basketball players

centre

The centre is usually the tallest player on the team and plays close to the basket.

  • In attack: Centres focus on scoring from short range and collecting rebounds.
  • In defence: They protect the rim by blocking shots and gathering missed attempts.

The centre is often the team’s main inside presence.

power forward

The power forward performs many of the same duties as the centre but tends to be more mobile.

  • Plays near the basket, competing for rebounds and guarding taller opponents.
  • Often takes longer shots than the centre.

This role blends physical play with scoring ability.

small forward

Small forwards are versatile players who move across the entire court.

  • Can score both close to the basket and from distance.
  • Can defend all players
  • Contribute in many aspects of the game.

They are often seen as the team’s most adaptable players.

point guard

The point guard leads the team’s play.

  • Organises the attack and controls the pace of the game.
  • Usually the strongest dribbler and passer.
  • Defends the opposing point guard and looks to win possession.

They are often described as the leader on the court.

shooting guard

The shooting guard is typically the team’s most accurate shooter.

  • Excels at scoring from long range.
  • Handles the ball well to create scoring chances.
  • Plays a key role in adding points.

They are often relied upon when the team needs a score.

Each position plays an important part in a team’s success. From the centre protecting the basket to the point guard directing play, every role matters!
