Holiday sports camps give young talent chance to shine

As the countdown to this year’s Olympic Games ticks away, Neston Recreation Centre is encouraging a new generation of young people to try their hand at different sports.

The centre is staging three days of Sports Camps during the February half term holidays aimed at young people aged 8-13 years. Football, volleyball, tennis and swimming are just some of the activities young people can experience under the watchful eyes of professional fitness instructors.

There’s also three days of sports fun and games for younger children, aged between four and seven years old, during the school break on February 16-18.

Lesley Finnigan, Brio Leisure’s Centre Manager at Neston, said the sessions would provide the perfect opportunity for young people to try their hand at a range of sports regardless of ability or experience.

“With the next Olympic Games just a few months away it’s a great opportunity to encourage young sporting talent of the future to take part in something they might learn to love.

“The three day camps are targeted at various age groups and incorporate different activities so young people can experience sports such as tennis and volleyball as well as having fun in the pool on our Wet and Wild obstacle course, which involves negotiating giant inflatables.”

Brio staff member Melanie Roberts twice trialled for the British Olympic Gymnastic team and competed in the European and Commonwealth Games. She developed her love for her chosen sport when she was aged five and now encourages young hopefuls to achieve their potential.

“The camps are to encourage young people to have fun and improve their fitness – but it would be fantastic if they also inspired someone just like Melanie to go on and achieve success through sport,” added Lesley.

The camps take place between 10.00am and 4.00pm and there is a small charge to attend based on whether the young person comes to one or all three daytime sessions.

The centre will also be hosting a range of other activities aimed at young people through the half term holidays at discounted prices, including roller discos, junior gym sessions, for those aged 12 years and over, and arts, painting and craft sessions for those aged between 4 and 12 years.
